Emily and Charlie got married on the rocky coast of Kennebunkport, Maine in early August. I spent the days before obsessively checking the weather every five minutes because I knew it was supposed to rain, but I woke up to sunny skies on the morning of their wedding. Hours later, when I arrived at the seaside house that Emily and her bridesmaids were getting dressed in, there were still no signs of rain to speak of. It seemed like we were in the clear right up until Emily and her father took their first steps down the aisle. In that exact moment, the skies broke open and it began to pour.
My first thought was, "If this has to happen, thank god it's happening to Emily and Charlie." This wasn't because I didn't want a beautiful day for them, but because I knew it didn't matter to them at all. You could see it in the way Emily and her dad threw their hands up and laughed the whole way down the aisle, how Emily and Charlie kept laughing at the alter, and for the entire day, for that matter. All that mattered is that they were about to be married. This was obvious. Their love, friendship, and brilliant sense of humor was contagious. I've never seen a couple genuinely bring together a group of people the way Emily and Charlie brought their guests together. I walked away feeling not like I had been hired to photograph their wedding, but like I had been invited to it. All of the thanks and congrats, guys!
